SPECIAL MEMBERS CONCERT

16 May: Members Only

To celebrate the acquisition of the August Förster baby grand piano, HMS hosted an exclusive event to present this exceptional piano to our members and selected guests. Two of South Africa’s outstanding young pianists, Gerhard Joubert and Isaac van der Merwe, delivered triumphant performances of Gershwin and Rachmaninov on both the newly acquired Förster and the excellent HMS Yamaha piano.

Isaac van der Merwe

Isaac van der Merwe began his musical journey with percussion in 2012 before switching to piano in 2014 and cello in 2015.

A versatile musician, he played with the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for several years. Since 2021, he has studied under Albie van Schalkwyk and François du Toit, earning top prizes at the Johann Vos, Pieter Kooij, Atterbury, and Hennie Joubert competitions, and placing second in the 2023 UNISA National Piano Competition.

He has appeared as a soloist with the Cape Town and Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestras, most recently debuting with the CPO in June 2024 performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto. A keen chamber musician, Isaac regularly performs in Cape Town, enjoys collaboration, and was awarded the Human Naudé Music Scholarship in 2024.

He also explores composition and classic literature.
