HMS has recently acquired a magnificent August Förster baby grand piano

Generously donated by the Kumleben family in memory of their late mother, Lulu Kumleben, who was a passionate music lover. This remarkable instrument, which was restored earlier this year by the Keith Goodwill workshop in Stellenbosch, embodies the highest standards of design, materials, and craftsmanship.

Famous composers such as Richard Strauss and Sergei Prokofiev owned Förster pianos, and even Giacomo Puccini used a Förster piano while composing several of his operas.

To celebrate this exceptional acquisition, HMS will host an exclusive event on Friday, 16 May 2025, where we will present the piano to a select audience of members and invited guests. Two of South Africa’s best young pianists will be playing in this concert.

David Marsden is a third-year BMus student at the University of Stellenbosch, currently studying under Professor Mario Nell and Mr Winand Grundling. He began his music studies at the University of Pretoria, where he was taught by Professor Theo van Wyk.

David has participated in masterclasses with renowned musicians including Arvid Gast, Arian Tien, Benjamin Zander, Gerben Grotenhuis, and Dr Ben Schumann. He began accompanying congregations in the West Rand at the age of thirteen and served as Music Coordinator at the NG Church Wonderpark in 2023 before relocating to Stellenbosch.

He now serves as a substitute organist at both the Dutch Reformed Church in Stellenbosch—where he also organizes student concerts each term—and the NG Church Welgelegen. David has performed alongside Professor Theo van Wyk and Mr Winand Grundling, and has played at various SAKOV events, including multiple district meetings in the West Rand and the 2023 AGM. He is a three-time recipient of the SAKOV Undergraduate Bursary.
